Introduction
Ever since I was in high school, I had aspersion and ambitions of joining the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity thanks to my immediate standpoint interaction with men of Alpha. My father, as well as two of my uncles, were members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and their actions and way of life really influenced my desire to join the fraternity. Apart from exhibiting exceptional leadership skills at home, the men I consider my mentors in life to this day had the true spirit of an Alpha man. This is evident through their thoughts, words, and deeds in the community. Other men of Alpha who provided a sense of service and leadership and advocacy in the community just to mention a few ranges from figures such as Adam Clayton, Martin Luther King Jr, and John Hope Franklin. After conducting research on the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and comparing it to a number of other fraternities, I realized that the fraternity is the first African-American intercollegiate fraternity founded at Cornell University in 1906. The Fraternity is aimed at stimulating the ambitions of its members, aid downtrodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status, encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood and prepare its members for the greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual members.
I believe that my experiences in life also have influenced me in the decision to join the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. I grew up in a society whereby segregation and discrimination are carried out mainly on the basis of race and socio-economic grounds. I have been involved in community development programs at various levels and realized that changing the life of one individual would make a great impact on society. I have always wanted to make a contribution to society and put an end to the oppression of members of the society. I would like to see a society whereby we support each other ambitions and goals in life and whereby the rights of every individual are respected. Joining the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will provide me the opportunity to achieve this and improve my leadership skills. Alpha Phi Alpha will provide me an even more ingrained sense of community leadership and service and an opportunity to be a voice of the voiceless in the community.
Conclusion
If honored to be a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, I promise to uphold to the vision of always being interested in the success of my Alpha Phi Alpha brothers. I will also uphold the high-quality standards of an Alpha Man. I intend to become a loyal member and always work hard to become a role model to other Alpha Phi Alpha as well as the society in general. Being a man who holds strong morals, high standards as well as a positive attitude I am sure that I will impact positively on the fraternity. I have special pride in hoping to belong to the nations' first black fraternity and believe that Alpha Phi Alpha will bring out great qualities in me as the fraternity is all about promoting a more perfect union among Alpha men as well as further brotherly love and enkindle fraternal spirit. I look forward to being considered for membership in such laudable and noble fraternity.
