Its 5.00 am and my alarm goes off. I rush to the kitchen and prepare a cup of coffee before taking a quick shower. I brush my teeth before putting on my scrub top, grab my keys and drive off to the hospital. I walk in at 6.30 am and receive a report from the night nurses. Together, we walk around my assigned zone and review patients charts and at the same time making sure there are no emergent needs. Approximately 45 minutes later, I access a computer to review doctors notes, orders to execute, blood results and to identify patients who require 8.00 am medications. I determine which patient to see first based on his/her conditions and rush out. I discharge my first patient around this time.

By the time the clock hits 9.30, I have finished assessing my patients. I have 30 minutes to chart information and document medical history before administering the patients needs at 10am. Next, I check if orders have been updated and prioritize new and existing orders. I receive a new patient, make a quick diagnosis and discharge or admit the patient. As I refill my coffee cup, I begin to send repeat AM for patients whose lab results hemolyzed and draw more lab work. I examine ultrasound and imaging results of patients with broken legs, arms and ribcage and prepare for discharge since everything appears normal.

Suddenly, an alaris beeps notifying me that a patient needs another bag of normal saline hung. This will not be the last alaris of the day. I evaluate the imaging results for my other patient with abdominal pain. The CT scan is completely normal. I prepare for her discharge. During this morning rounds, I educate relevant patients and their family members on home care such as catheter and lumber punchers.

Time is moving fast because its already 14.30 and I am returning from my lunch break. No sooner had I received new orders and reviewed new data than I hear the sound of an ambulance. I walk down the hall to find a 41 year old female with acute abdominal pains with fevers, palpitation and vomiting. It appears to be appendicitis; however, I will have to take tests to verify the condition. I also have a cancer patient with fevers, coughs and shortness of breath, and a teenager with chest discomfort. I document the assessment of my new patients and visit those previously admitted and discharge two more patients.

Two hours later, I offer help to a colleague with an ambulatory wound care, administering medicines and crutches teaching at her area. Later on, I turn over some rooms yet again and take an impromptu session with a psych patient who had attempted suicide, and a diabetic lady who have not taken insulin all day and regulate her sugar level.

At 6.30 pm, I undertake a final assessment, recheck vital signs and fill patient follow up notes just before handing over the reports to night nurses. I am exhausted and glad the day was a success. During the past 12 hours I had succeeded in calming down patients fears and spending time with patients to know them better. Some of the patients were appreciative giving me a sense of satisfaction. I leave the hospital facility having done my best and ready for another day.
