The study of child development is an important aspect of social science that shows the reasons behind their learning abilities, disposition and relationships they make. The brain of the child at birth resembles a blank book into which later life experiences are imprinted to define personality. The parents are the immediate social agents with which children tend to develop strong relations. The skills and impressions that parents offer their children at infancy lasts in their long-term memory thus influences their entire life.

According to Bissoli (2014), multiple factors operate alone or reinforces each other to control a childs socio-emotional profile. Among these many factors including inherited psychological patterns, peer relationships, and social affiliations, the role of parental care and impressions in the development of their children remains pervasive (Holmes et al., 2015). The parents have a first role in initiating a perception in their children and reinforcing it over time. Childhood beliefs, values, thoughts and behavior determines the youth and adult lives of children (Yaffe, 2015). Therefore, verbal insults or abuse affects that formation of self-image that consequently defines their personality, abilities, and thoughts about the world.

This paper bases on the principle that behavior is a learned process that involves reflection and reinforcement of already learned information (Bissoli, 2014). In essence, verbal insults affirm a negative mentality thus orienting children towards antisocial behaviors such as aggression, lying, or stealing (Holmes et al., 2015). The pattern of reasoning that parents inculcate in their children makes them resilient and able to cope with life issues. The study of how parental verbal abuse affects their children is important as it provides a background case for current teenage problems such as juvenile delinquency, drug addiction and dropouts (Holmes et al., 2015). It also provides possible reasons for understanding the differential learning abilities, social relationships, and self-esteem among learners within educational settings (Yaffe, 2015).

The best research design for this study is mixed research that involves a hybrid of qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative research will be relevant in assessing parameters relating to values, beliefs, and cultures while quantitative design explicitly restates the numerical imperatives of the theoretical information. The specific questions that will inform the curse of the study include; how is personality developed? How do children learn new behavior? Is it possible to change the social mindset of a child? What are the consequences of negative self-perception among children?
