Effective teaching helps teachers understanding the learning abilities of students throughout their cognitive development issues. Teachers are able to define students needs thus devise suitable learning instructions for each students. Literacy in the 21st century has several principles that help teachers in formulating daily learning strategies for students. The first principle talks about teachers understanding students mode of learning. This principle is quite important because not each student has a different approach to learning. A teacher must understand and learn these modes so he or she can find suitable learning modes that will work for the students. When teachers impose their learning methods their teachings are ineffective as they will not be clearly understood by the students.

The principle talks of several theories that describe the different process people use in learning. Behaviorism theory holds that learning is a stimulus and response action. Through use of a reward system teachers have the ability to motivate students to learn. Students get the urge to get to know new things especially if they know that at the end they will be rewarded to learn. The constructivism theory focuses on the student and teachers can use this theory to help students learn. Teachers will be able to prepare engaging activities that will call for their students teamwork. Constructivism encourages students to assimilate new information to the pre existing knowledge and experiences to help in understanding. It is clear that teachers have a great impact in students lives other than the primary role of teaching to read and write. Teachers use language to initiate social actions and change.

Principle six talks about how teachers should organize for instructions as a strategy for effective teaching. This principle is important because it encourages teachers to use writing and reading workshops to help students in learning. These workshops enable teachers to engage each student individually for the purpose of monitoring the progress of students. Literature circles have been discussed in this principle extensively. Collaborative books are formed that task students with reading books that have a connection in terms of theme and authors. Students have the liberty to choose the books they desire to read as long as they stick by the instructions. Teachers in the effective teaching strategy sometimes tell students to read and respond to class materials also known as literature focus unit. Through this method teachers are able to support their students learning.

A basal reading program is an approach that enables teachers incorporate effective teaching methods to help students learn. It includes use of text books, teachers manuals, and workbooks that give students reading instructions. Teachers should also strive to create a good classroom environment as discussed in principle three. Principle three stands out because students need to be in a good environment that favors their learning. When students feel safe in they are motivated to take more risks to learning new information. It is important for effective teachers to find and create a suitable classroom environment for their students. This is because many students do not automatically cope in a new environment. Every first week of school teachers should strive to make students feel comfortable providing them with cooperative, responsible and classmates who are assistive and respectful.
