Introduction
I am a student pursuing a Bachelor of Media Major of Public Relation and Advertisement at the University of New South Wales. I intend to complete this degree by November 2019, having started it in July 2016. The journey so far has been both motivating and rewarding in terms of gaining knowledge and gaining various insights relating to the industry. On the flip side, the journey has not been easy as I have encountered some challenges along the way but I have been persistent all through. I am an ambitious and driven public relations graduate who has extensive knowledge of directing PR campaigns in both agency and in-house settings. I am also an excellent communicator which is an asset that makes me fit for the public relations industry. I have interacted widely with the social media platforms and I know how to navigate them which gives and edge when it comes to interacting with the wider social media audience.
Philosophy
In everything that I do, I am led by the following philosophies:
Passion
One is able to work best in a setting that he or she is passionate about. When one has a passion for a job, he or she will give it the best shot. Passion is one of my leading philosophies. I am particularly passionate about public relations and social media and any job touching on those two areas falls under the category of my best jobs. Granted such an opportunity, I always offer my best. I believe in doing work that will make me happy. I do not want to consider my job as a burden that I have to strive to achieve but a source of joy. I believe that doing a job that I am passionate about helps me to keep growing in the job and becoming better.
Dedication to Work
I believe that for one to achieve the best in his or her job, and then he or she needs to be dedicated. Being dedicated to work means giving the best, and being dedicated all the efforts towards that job. Once I am given a job, I dedicate all my energies and efforts towards giving the best in my role. This is a philosophy that has helped me achieve success in my past jobs.
Adherence to the Existing Law
Every organization is bound by certain laws and regulations that must be adhered to. Every time I am given a job, I take time to familiarize myself with the laws and regulations of the organization. This helps to always do what is right. I understand that when one breaks the law, it can be disastrous both for the individual person and the organization at large. As a public relations and social media officer, I understand that these are critical areas that are bound by laws which keep on changing every new day. To be on the safe side, I ensure that I am up-to-date with the laws and regulations at play. In disciplines such as social media, one can be easily jailed if they are found to have broken the law.
Courtesy
Courtesy has to do with how one relates to other people. A public relations officer is the face of the organization. As such, if he or she is not courteous to the stakeholders, he or she will be damaging the image of the organization. As an employee, I ensure that I am courteous to everyone, both the internal employees, stakeholders, and any other outsider. Although sometimes the people one handles as a public relations officer may become rude, it is prudent not to react emotionally but treat such people as though they are happy. This way, one is able to keep all the stakeholders happy about the organization.
Fidelity to Truth
Fidelity to truth means being truthful in all the dealings. When I am given a particular role to play, I ensure that I remain truthful and honest in everything that I do. Being truthful helps me to win trust from the customers and the management. This is a philosophy I hold dear.
Past Job Experience
Market Intern
I have a strong foundation in public relations and my experience continues to widen. From July 2018 to date, I have been working as a market intern with Sydneycode Pty Ltd. While here, I have been assigned various roles which have made me a better person. I have gained both knowledge and experience. While working with Sydneycode Pty Ltd, I have been engaged in various roles such as contacting various brands to cooperate with SydAlice and co-organize offline media promotion events, present advertising goals and strategies to the clients based on project requirements, research about the reach of various media channels to suggest the most feasible and effective options to the clients and the effectiveness of advertising campaigns and suggests improvements to increase the reach of a campaign. These roles have taught me a lot about public relations and social media internship. In my roles, I have been able to show commitment and focus in my position. I am proud to say that my contribution as a market intern has pushed Sydneycode Pty Ltd to greater heights. The company has been able to witness rising social medial ratings and increased sales. If I have been able to make these contributions within a period of one year with the company, I believe that given a longer time, I would achieve more.
Trainee Manager
I have also worked as a trainee manager for one year and four months with Chatime Milk Tea. I worked for this organization from July 2017 to November 2018. While here, I recorded great improvements and helped the organization to become a favorite for the customers. My responsibilities included carrying out the store operations and administrative management, screening resumes on the website, and inform the interview, and participate in the interview, training service staff to enhance customer service and increase profits by suggestive selling products, delivering periodic performance evaluations, apportioning raises, stock options, and bonus grants for employees and implementing inventive marketing strategies to drive increased sales with minimal impact on labor budgeting.
In all the organizations I have worked for, I received very positive and encouraging feedback from the management. I was always considered an asset within the organization despite my short stint. This brought to me the idea that what is valued in an organization is not the period an employee has stayed with the organization but his or her contribution towards the success of the organization. Thus, it is possible for an employee to stay with an organization for five years and make very minimal contributions while another could stay for one year and make greater contributions. With this in mind, I am always dedicated to making a positive mark in every organization that I am in. Given my interests in public relations, I always found working as fun and I committed myself fully towards achieving the objectives of the organization. This is a spirit I hope to continue with even in the future. My greatest joy is to see the organization I am working for growing and having an edge against its competitors.
Assessment
During the various organizations I have worked for, I always requested to be assessed by an insider. In most cases, I requested my supervisor to give me an honest assessment of my contributions to the company. In all the cases, I received positive feedback from the management and the supervisors were happy with me. Mostly, I was hailed for my ability to interact with social media platforms and conduct an analysis of the audience. Particularly in Sydneycode Pty Ltd, I was able to do an analysis of the online audience and advised the organization on the most probable ways of capturing that audience. When the organization heeded my advice, it witnessed increased sales. As a result, I was hailed by the management for my wise decisions in giving the company an edge over its competitors. However, there are some areas that were highlighted for me to improve on. One of the things was time management. In many cases, I spent too much time performing one activity and forgetting another one. When this behavior persisted, I would find that at the end of the day, I had a huge workload left incomplete. The supervisor at Chatime Milk Tea informed me that this happened because I was too keen with details and I always aimed for perfection. This left some task unattended to as I spent a lot of time of one project. While aiming for perfection is a good thing, it is important to remember about all the projects that need to be done. As a form of advice, the supervisor at Chatime Milk Tea implored on me to always set a program for the task of the day and accord each of them the necessary time. With that, it will be possible to handle the entire task within the stipulated time without compromising on quality.
Work-Related Seminar
I have attended various seminars and workshops related to public relations and related disciplines. In particular, I attended one seminar dubbed, "The Ins and Outs of Public Relations." This seminar was meant to widen the knowledge of public relation officers in the industry and the aspiring ones on the various phases of the public relations discipline. The seminar also hoped to give more information on the expanding discipline of public relations as well as the anticipated changes and difficulties in the future. The seminar highlighted several changes that era expected in the public relations industry especially due to the advancement in technology. This information was crucial to help people adjust accordingly as technology changes. In particular, there are expected changes in the use of social media as laws and regulations governing social media are being devised every day. As such, anything posted in the social media must conform to the set-out regulations since a breach of any of the regulations could cost the company one works for a great fortune. Thus, as a Public Relations and Social Media Intern, it is important for one to keep posted on the regulations that ate being passed each day.
This seminar, coupled with the feedback that I received from my supervisors have transformed my approach to giving feedback in a timely manner and conducting my projects and task in accordance with the existing social media use regulations. Various feedback models were appraised during the workshop and out of curiosity, I have been able to apply some of them in my responsibilities. One that I found most beneficial is setting a target of the work to be achieved by the end of the day and allocating time for each task. I have tried on this model and I have found it very convenient for me. It is a model I wish to continue applying even in the future. In all the places that I have used it, it has turned out to be very useful and rewarding.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my previous works have taught me a lot. I have not only gained more knowledge but also experience. Through various assessments, I have been able to realize my strengths and weaknesses. For the areas that I am weak in, I have resolved to improve and I have devised strategies to help me become a better person. I am also guided by my philosophies which have helped greatly. In my role as a Public Relations and Social Media Intern, I promise to gather all my strengths to make the best for the organization. I believe that the change required in an organization can be instigated by only a single employee. I aspire to be this employee who will change the image of the organization for the better.
