Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to underpin banning of school homework.
Thesis statement: With the ongoing effects related to homework given to our children, homework should be banned to give an opportunity for other important growth and development on our students making them all rounded children.
Introduction
Is homework is of real help to our children? I strongly believe that homework should be banned completely as they cause adverse effects to our children (S. Aslihan, 2013). Homework is one of the biggest debatable issues in our modern academic world. And it is very unfortunate that most people do not realize the negative effects homework imposes to our children. It really breaks my heart to see how our poor schoolchildren sometimes come home stressed and end up do their homework when they are so much drained (LIU, et, al., 2013).
S. Aslihan argued that homework adds stress to our children as they use the time that could be rather spent on their hobbies and other commitments to do homework (2013). Additionally, they do spend a lot of time doing their homework until late hours at night which may mess up their sleep cycles. And it is very unfortunate that some of the children going through such hard times may be your brothers and sisters or even sons and daughters. And today, I will discuss with you about the need of banning homework to ease our sisters and brothers ensuring that they are not affected in one way or the other (Rosario, et, al., 2018).
Why Homework Should Be Banned
Firstly homework can have a general effect on students' social life, health, and grades. All the hours logged on schoolwork and those that are logged in class can overwhelm students and make them feel unmotivated (Thirumurthy, 2014). Homework is usually meant to be done after school, after eight or more hours of active school work. Unfortunately, children end up do their homework when they are very exhausted and mentally drained. Students are usually mentally drained when they commence doing their homework. They always begin their assignments when tired due to the long day school experience. This implies that students will not be able to concentrate fully when undertaking their homework (S. Aslihan, 2013).
According to Xu, schoolteachers do not put into consideration the mental health of our children when they give them long and demanding assignments (2013). Consequently, they find it very hard to complete those assignments and frequently do them incorrectly and sometimes fail to do them at all. Because of mental drainage and lack of full concentration, their general performance may not be as good as it could be. Therefore, the question is, is it not the education system that should make someone become a better version of themselves? School children come from different backgrounds, and therefore, some may be booked and be so much occupied, thus they may not get enough time to complete or attend to their assignment. In such circumstances, their instructors may begin to not trust them, creating poor views of the students in the instructor's eyes (Thirumurthy, 2014).
Secondly, homework may affect the student's general grade causing negative affect their confidence. Students become completely burnt out after the full day of active study in their classes (Rosario, et, al., 2018). As a result, they may not be at a position to complete all their assignment and sometimes they may begin relying on their parents, sister of other individuals who can do their homework at a fee. When this kind of behavior sets in, advantages of homework begin to vanish and they begin to experience general declination of their overall grade (Xu, 2013).
Additionally, giving excessive homework to students discourages active learning that promotes scrutiny of class content and the application of such content in the real world realm (LIU, et, al., 2013). Due to low grade negatively influence students' confidence to perform in other areas as they are demoralized. Homework leads to weariness and absence of problem-solving skills. Teachers should, therefore, find some viable and preferable approaches of assessing student's performance based on ways of discovering areas where they excel rather than fail (Xu & Wu, 2013).
Thirdly, the reason why I believe homework should be banned from all school is that they are time wasters. Homework constitutes of things that do not fully encourage most of physical, mental health and some critical child development (Rosario, et, al., 2018). Additionally, most institution instructors do not pay close attention to assignments given to students. According to LIU, et, al. (2013), they are just concerned in looking to see that student has attempted the assignment and some endeavor has been made. Therefore, students should be granted extra time for social time and extracurricular activities permitting students an opportunity to revitalize their bodies and minds. According to the website Stress and Consequences (2018), students having more assignments to complete spend less time socializing with their family members making them feel isolated and detached from society. Older students having part-time job experiences problems in balancing school work with their work. This leaves them without time to relax and socialize thus becoming stressed, affecting their home and school life (Rosario, et, al., 2018).
Conclusion
As you can see above, homework has got some ramifications that may lead to adverse effects on student's health and their performance in general. Additionally, it also affects how these students socialize with their parents and other children. As you are all aware, the students become so much occupied and spend a lot of time doing their assignments reducing the time for relaxation and time for other physical activities that contribute to general growth and development (S. Aslihan, 2013). We can, therefore, see that see that homework adds unreasonable stress to children. Additionally, we find that homework leads to random waste of our knowledge and time that could otherwise be utilized in learning and developing new skills that could otherwise give substantial results (Thirumurthy, 2014).
