Introduction
The problem of rising water pollution in areas of Los Angeles like Wilmington and the other regions hence the need to develop a solution to the problem was identified. Through a critical assessment for the remedy that will be available. The most contributing factor of the challenge is because there is a large population that engages in different practices. Practices, like using pesticides and disposing off litter in an unexpected manner, lead to water pollution. When the water is polluted, the effect is to the same people who end up having contaminated food and water. There is also the challenge where the sewages link with the clean water sources, which is also a challenge for the people. The need therefore arises to have adequate measures to eradicate the environmental problem to enhance healthy living standards.
Explain the Identified Need for Change and Mission of the Project
Water pollution is a challenge that results when the harmful unwanted materials find their way into the water leading to change of the cleanliness, which is in turn, dangerous for the health of people. There is a common saying that water is life; hence, water forms a significant part of the environment. There are primary uses of water like domestic use and other purposes like in industries for manufacturing and agricultural purpose; hence, water is essential. Interestingly in some countries, the water used for drinking does not meet the set standards by the World Health Organization. There are also cases where people are reported to have lost their lives as a result of poor quality water (Haseena, 2017).
The root cause of the challenge is first, increase in population and then the method used to dispose of the waste materials is not appropriate. The origins of waste pollution are poor disposal of waste from industries which most of the times end up in water bodies, sewage tanks leakages, oil released by boats and ships, radioactive wastes and finally atmospheric dispositions. The metals and oil disposed off in water are harmful to human health and animals. The industrial waste effects result from declining of the immune system, failure in reproductive health, poisoning and other diseases like severe diarrhea. Also, when the plants are damaged, the nutrition of humans and animals is at risk, including the animals in water that die due to pollution (Haseena, 2017).
Increased domestic sewage disposed off in the rivers and other water sources are the leading cause of human pollution. The contributing factor is with poor management that makes the water unfit for humans, animals and plants. Chemicals like insecticides and pesticides also are not safe for the water bodies since they also contribute to pollution and eutrophication from the fertilizers from these chemicals (Haseena, 2017).
The result is a health issue for humans and waterborne diseases. For areas that receive high rainfall, the loving conditions reduce hence, new diseases develop as a result of the challenges experienced. Having identified the problem, and knowing that there is a need for change, the purpose will be to come up with ways through which the challenge of rising water pollution cases will be minimized. The mission is to ensure that the environment is supportive of human and animal health through promoting clean water sources even for the plans to be consumed.
The Model
After identifying that there is the need for a change in the water pollution, the next step is to find the causes of contributing factors towards pollution that have already have been discussed; the next step is to come up with the manner that pollution should be minimized. The plan toward the change should be assessed from all diversity to ensure that it will help to come up with the appropriate solution for the challenge. The government is only focused on business and economic growth but do not figure on the ways to control industrial waste. Water pollution can be a factor of declining stability, which is not a positive effect on development. According to Blackwelder (2014), there are ways that water pollution can be reduced through enhancing various strategies beginning with education at the community level.
The first is by having a goal despite wanting economic growth; it should also focus on maintaining support through the change of methods that businesses conduct themselves, especially concerning the disposal of waste. The mission is to create a sustainable environment fit to support human, animal and plant health. An example would be to engage the chemical companies in utilities to produce green energy.
Companies should go an extra mile to have eco-auditors that will assess whether the company through their production has an impact on life, especially on a negative perspective. The eco-auditors will also help the organizations to avoid refrain from any form of pollution like water pollution.
There should be laws implemented for those who pollute the environment and receive a warning. A repeat of the same should have consequences that should be stated outrightly for the companies to know.
Behavioral and Population-Level Objectives to Describe the Changes
After people are aware of the factors that contribute to change, there are also other behaviors that they should change, especially from a personal level. There are various behaviors that they should change so that the water pollution challenge is wholly abolished. According to Kjelstorm, Lodh, McMichael, Ranmuthugala, Shrestha & Kingsland (2006), the crucial factors are like:
- Having an adequate means that they will be able to reduce the disposal of wastes,
- In their agricultural practices, the harmful chemicals and fertilizers should be avoided,
- Ensuring that all the water that they consume is fit for consumption.
- Health practitioners should work together with individuals to help them maintain proper sanitation.
- Having equipment like water filters and boiling water should be the safety precautions.
For the entire population, people should be keen on the details to identify when other people pollute the environment. Then clear rules should be formulated and an enforcement team to endure that those that fail to follow the requirements are placed under severe repercussions for defaulting the expectations.
Strategies for the Mission and Objectives to be Accomplished
In a community, various measures would be used to better the quality of water the change can be through operations conducted internally and through a leadership change. According to the Department of Environmental Quality (2018), the internal procedures are:
- Having the leaks once they have been identified and creating toilets with low flush water in the public facilities.
- The use of xeriscaping methods during the process of landscaping to help in conservation of water to also enable other people to have enough supply of water in their homes.
- Use of water sparingly and appropriately to avoid lots wastage. Water should only be used when necessary.
- Application of fertilizers and other pesticides and insecticides sparingly to reduce the quantity of surface water.
- Public policy and leadership should be used to aid in the conservation of water in the community.
- The citizens should be educated in businesses by using the resources wisely.
- The storm and drains should be stenciled away from the rivers and water sources.
- Education and education programs should be used to conserve the waste for industrial water.
Strom water runoff is the primary source of water pollution that carries along with it chemicals and other forms of toxins in the soil. The communities can adopt practices like planning to have a watershed to maximize broader application and principles in design. The natural planning methods are also contributory to the minimization of pollutant agents.
- The objectives behind the establishment of water pollution change would be to:
- Minimize the cases of bacterial infection resulting from unclean water
- To ensure that people are aware of the causes, effects and the measures to prevent water pollution.
- To help conserve the environment
- Protect people, animals and plants from severe effects of water pollution.
Steps for the Implementation of the Strategies for the Mission and the Objectives
According to Inyinbor, Adebesin, Oluyori, Adelani, Dada & Oreofe (2018), there are various things to be done like:
- avoiding greasy and oily fat from the sink in the kitchen the oil should be appropriately disposed
- The tub or toilet and sink should not have any chemicals poured.
- The solid wastes should be kept solid
- The toilet should have efficient water for purposes of cleanliness
- Water and electricity should always be conserved.
- Pesticides and other chemicals like fertilizers should be minimized.
The Values and Attitudes Related to the Field of Human Services to create Social Change
Based on the assessment of the levels of challenge encountered, there are attitude and values that should be shown by the community members. The values include being disciplined such that they do not go against the rules set, having self-drive towards better environmental conditions and being committed to the roles assigned to them. The attitudes involve: having concerns of the way that the environment in the community can be changed and being on the limelight to help law enforcement access the people that do not adhere to the rules for the sake of health and the environment (Orderud & Vogt, 2016).
Conclusion
Practicing the appropriate measures would help to change the rising stormwater pollution in the Los Angeles areas. Identification of the causal effects, having the plan to help improve things and working together as a community is the factors that contribute to deal with the water pollution challenge. The people should have the appropriate attitudes and values that will help achieve the anticipated change.
