What Stood Out for You?
In the film 'deaf out lout loud', what stood out for me was how deaf people are different. In the movie, I watched the Paco Garcia family how they used various methods to communicate. Some had a hearing aid, so they mixed both signing and speaking. I was very fascinated by how they could read lips and interpret what the other person was saying. It stood out because it cleared all the misconceptions I had about deaf people communicating similarly. I was able to see how different families handled things in their way through the stories presented.
What Did You Study About Deaf Culture, Community, and History?
Through the film, I studied more about deaf culture. Deaf culture is like everybody else; the only thing that is missing is hearing sense. The deaf people brought up their family and taught their children how to use different modes of communication. After watching this film, I discovered that not all deaf persons' employ sign language and some deaf persons can use their voice. I was able to understand many variations used by deaf communities. Deaf people genuinely care about one another and embrace their culture. Their history shows that they are proud to live loud without feeling sorry for themselves. Deaf people can accomplish as much as healing people.
Did The Film Strengthen Something You Previously Knew About the Deaf Community? Explain
I always knew that a deaf parent has I high possibility of getting a deaf child. Through watching the film, this was reinforced by watching families that had six children four of them being deaf. Most of the hearing was lost when the children were young but what I did not know is that deaf parents can have hearing children. This came as a surprise when I watched this movie and found out Paco wife was hearing child from deaf parents. I also learned how important it is to learn sign language when you are likely to interact with deaf people. Olson argues that learning these signs makes communication easier compared to lip reading (2018).
Describe Something of Your Knowledge That the Film Echoes.
Through my line of work, I have interacted with deaf people regularly. It is regular that I learned to sign few languages sings to communicate better with them. During the film, this was reflected since some of the signs I discovered were being used. I also learned that I could be confusing one or two signs which by the help of this film I corrected. Sign language is widely used in the world and every institution it is hard to miss a deaf person. It is essential to understand their language since it will also make things easier for you too.
Describe Anything in the Film That You Feel Might Have Been Left Unsaid
The film discussed a lot about the deaf community. Through this film, many people can now understand deaf people better. It minimized the gap between the deaf and hearing community. I feel it might have been significant if the film discussed more the cochlear implant and its importance. This is because although the deaf community embraces their culture, it is important for people to know how the implant can help your child.
