Nurse managers have a substantial influence on the development of a quality healthcare environment. In all the leadership roles in the health care institutions, nurse managers have the most direct impact on the nature of care services availed to patients, during a health care experience. This essay is a discussion of a nurse manager skills inventory through an analysis of my personal and professional accountability, care planning, personal journey disciplines and reflective practice reference behaviors or tenets. The essay also illustrates how as a nurse manager I can employ my current leadership skills set to advocate for change in the workplace. The essay ultimately identifies one personal goal for my leadership growth and also depicts the implementation plan that can be employed to achieve that goal.

Strengths and Weaknesses Analysis

Personal and Professional Accountability

In this classification, there are three strengths that can be evidenced by my practice as a nurse manager. First, I undertake annual growth and development assessment seeking to evaluate my growth as a nurse manager. I also regularly perform career planning, develop action plans and I have plans to further my education to assist me as a nursing manager. Second, I uphold high ethical practices and behavior when functioning as a nurse manager in the medical institution. Ultimately, I am seeking a certification for an online managerial course I am taking so as to further my performance as a nurse manager. Nevertheless, under this classification, my weakness as a nurse manager is that I am not a member of any professional nursing association focused on managerial skills in the health care environment.

Career Planning

Under my career planning objectives, I know and understand my current job descriptions as a nurse manager. However, I feel that I have not fully satisfied my job requirements as a nurse manager in reference to the current level of practice. However, I have well laid out career plans and what to do in order to get there. I also understand the future nursing managerial needs of the health care sector, and I have a plan to prepare myself with the right skills for satisfying such needs. Ultimately, I have positioned myself in a good career path that provides me with direction to achieve my future plans. The path also offers me both flexibility and capacity to adapt to any changes that might occur in the future scenarios.

Personal Journey Disciplines

In this classification, I have attained essential skills to promote me as a nurse manager. This is because I have been a position to attained shared leadership skills that assist me in managing councils and promoting shared leadership. Also, I have attained the active skill of reflection in my leadership behavior, which has immensely aided me in making rational decisions. However, I feel that I need to work more on the concept of action learning in solving various problems affecting different nursing personnel in the health care facility.

Reflective Practice Preference Behaviors/Tenets

Through my professional practice as a nurse manager, I have been able to attain an excellent number of skills that have improved my role qualities. Such skills have included the ability to uphold the truth and integrity in practice, ability to appreciate the ambiguity of my working environment and also potential to accept diversity as a vehicle of wholeness. I have also been a position to accept and appreciate the potential in myself and am also capable of holding multiple perspectives excellently without judgment. Also, I can keep a commitment to myself and nurture intellectual and emotional self. Nevertheless, I feel that I do not possess a willingness or quest for adventure aimed at knowing about new things.

How to Use Current Leadership Skills Set to Advocate for Change in Your Workplace

As a nursing manager, I will advocate for change through inclusive decision making. This is because all nursing practitioners in the medical institutions are essential components of attaining quality, safe and efficient patient services and health outcomes. Through inclusive decision-making process, nurses will be in a position to communicate their views of major decisions that could affect their operations in the health care institution. Consequently, this will aid in reducing the instances of resistance to change by the personnel due to decisions made by the managers alone. Ultimately, through inclusive decision making, there will be fewer conflicts between me, as a nurse manager, and the other nursing staffing members attending to the patients. This will aid in boosting the gross productivity of the whole health care institution in the long run.

Identification of One Personal Goal for My Leadership Growth and Its Implementation Plan

So as to be a more effective nurse manager, I plan to join a professional nursing association that deals with leadership training for the health care environment. Through the association, I believe that I will be in a position to learn more on being a perfect nurse manager. I will also be in a position to interact with other nurse managers in the organization and share various insights of being an efficient nurse manager. Also, so as to join such an association, I will undertake a research through the local medical directorate and check five organizations near my region of operation. I will then book an appointment with each of the organizations and then evaluate the best based on its training manifestos.

Conclusion

In conclusion, nurse managers have a substantial influence on the development of a quality healthcare environment. They also influence the nature of care services availed to patients and families during a health care experience. This is through coordinating the efforts of all nurses functioning in the medical facilities. As such, it is essential for a nurse manager to have a regular performance evaluation, aimed at seeking his/her potential in executing the various functions and objectives of leadership in the health care institution.
