On July 8, 1839, John D Rockefeller was born, in Richford New York. At the age of 14, he moved with his family to Cleveland Ohio. John D Rockefeller and his wife, Laura, had five children. The also had a daughter named Alice who died in infancy. Due to his nature as a hard worker, he did not take long to get a job as an auditor at the age of 16. He also embarked on numerous small business ventures and by the age of 20 he had decided to undertake out on his own with a business partner. While working as a commission merchant in meat, hay, grains and other goods, John Davidson Rockefeller was able to enable the company gross $450,000. John D Rockefeller was significant in that he played a big role in industrial revolution. The successes of the oil industry can be attributed to him.John D Rockefeller entered the oil business with Samuel Andrews who would eventually sell his oil refinery to him while also providing knowledge to the trade. As the business grew, Samuel Andrews was kept as a partner. As the company constantly grew and be more successful, it acquired new partners and was eventually renamed to Standard Oil Company. As a business strategist, John D Rockefeller made an agreement with another company called South Improvement Company that majored in transportation. This alliance enabled Standard Oil Company to eliminate their competitors making John D Rockefellers company a monopoly.
At the time, many people called John D Rockefeller a robber baron because they believed that he used unethical business practices while trying to amass extraordinary wealth. John D Rockefeller was called a robber baron as he was the most prominent person to create the most profitable company in the United States. His company dominated the oil industry for decades.
With his aggressive push into the oil business, the government soon became aware of the seemingly unstoppable march of his company. The monopolistic behavior of the company was not kindly regarded by the government, and this led to the introduction of the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1890. John D Rockefeller was business and a savvy strategist and therefore moved to dissolve the company thereby allowing each property that was run by the standard banner to be run by other individuals. In 1911, the different pieces of the company were once brought together, however, this time the company was deemed to be in violation of the antitrust laws and forced to dissolve. One has to be considered a business philanthropist if the government has to come up with strategies to counter your success in business. John D Rockefeller was significant in that he challenged the normal ways of conducting business. His management styled lead to a change in the management of companies.
John D Rockefeller was not only a savvy strategist in business. He was also a devout Baptist, and once he had retired from running the daily operations in one of the largest businesses in the world, he became busy with charity endeavors. Some of the money that he gave in charity was used for the creation of the University of Chicago. Moreover, he also helped in the creation of Rockefeller University which was previously named the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. Until his death, John D Rockefeller had given away $530 million to various causes both in the United States and other countries.
On May 23, 1937, John D Rockefeller died. He would not only be remembered as a business robber Baron but also as a loving and caring father who also helped to shape the united states to what it is today in terms of business.
